Bill Green to chair SRC, Jimenez to replace Dworetzky, sources say

By Dale Mezzacappa on Jan 17, 2014 01:01 AM

Notebook sources and other news reports indicate that Gov. Corbett intends to nominate Councilman Bill Green as chair of the School Reform Commission on Friday and appoint Farah Jimenez, executive director of the People's Emergency Center, to fill a second seat on the commission being vacated by Joseph Dworetzky.

Corbett will visit Philadelphia and go to Central High School tomorrow, where he will cite three District schools for academic excellence, but it is not known whether he will make the announcement then.

Green, a Democrat, has given interviews on his ideas for improving the beleaguered system while officially declining comment on whether he was lobbying for the unpaid position. Sources said he is prepared to resign from Council if he is confirmed by the Pennsylvania Senate, a process that could take months.

Jimenez, a Republican, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and also has a law degree from the university. She has, since 2010, led the People's Emergency Center, which offers services, including education and shelter, to mostly homeless women and children. Before that, she worked 13 years at Mt. Airy, USA, an economic development organization that helped revitalize the neighborhood's commercial corridor. Last year, former Secretary of Eduation Ronald Tomalis nominated her to a task force on homeless children.

More coverage on Friday.

Green seems to be for accountability on the surface, hopefully he will call out the state for its habitual lack of funding for Philadelphia's PUBLIC schools (doubtful), and implement a legitimate system for overseeing charter schools, also doubtful. Overall this seems like a deal with the devil for a corrupt Democratic council member to appeal for and the get appointed to the SRC by a corrupt Republican Governor.

He is appointed by Corbett. Do not expect any state or city accountability for this disaster from him. He will be more of the same corporate education deform.

It's odd all the republic districts in Pa were cleared by the state. Philadelphia is the only county who is having all these "sanctions" brought down. Corbett friend who runs a charter school, that was flagged for cheating, was cleared.

Yes, the charter lie movement is alive and well and blatantly corrupt. Green will do whatever his handler, Corbett, tells him to do just like Pedro.

I've been watching this board for almost two years and I struggle to remember any of the many many complaints come from actual charter parents. Basically, every complaint is from an employee of the PSD, unrepentant leftist throwbacks like Joe, or others with a vested interest in the maintaining an uncompetitive, unworkable, status quo. Whatever lies and corruption you imagine, apparently some 60k parents are happier than they were in the previous failure factories, and many more are lining up. Obviously the charters are doing something right.

Well, in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is King. I contend that the parents are being hoodwinked by the charter operators and the neighborhood shills they employ to spew said lies. Call me names but not a throwback, comrade. I'm 5'11 and will dunk on your head. I'm still in my prime and I'm stickin with that story. There was a shooting today at a charter in North Philly and that COULD happen anywhere but over time, parents will see charters for what they are........businesses that care very little for their kids and very much for the profit margin. And don't even get me started on the whole democracy rant about all kids being worth the same. You seem to have not grasped that concept and that ain't good.

I am laughing my head off "unrepentant leftist throwbacks"? I'm going to attempt to stop this nonsense in it's tracks. Status quo is not necessarily a bad thing (when something works) and these change for change sake folks (better known as change in my pocket) are being f found out. SDP employees who care about maintaining a public system FOR the public are suppposed to "repent" for what reason?

You are correct, Green has a choice between being the hero of and for the people or another pawn of Corbett's who will act like a dollar store puppet. Nutter et al have long ago made their choice now it's younger Billy's turn.

Both Green and Jimanez are pro privatization and anti-union. Not much hope here for preserving our public schools. The only solution is to repeal the state takeover and win back local control.

Ms. Endres---Not much hope indeed IF we continue on our same path but if we change our path, maybe things will be better. For example, One Term Tom wasn't going to venture near Central with 300 or more protesters to meet him. Cowards, like Bullies are cowards. If you make them "sweat," they don't like it.

Green= political opportunist, no training in Education, his father and grandfather are turning in their graves for getting in bed with Corbett and corporate privatizers...sighhh

We should have no corrupt politicians either Mr. and your brethren need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

Green is an admitted privatizer who says he has "ambitious plans" for the District. (probably just what Corbett wants to hear). The fact that he's a Democrat is a poltical calculation for Corbett who is running for reelection.

When you think about who are these people? Green is trying to pad his mayoral resume and Jimenez has worked for unimportant and ineffective community groups. I live in Mt Airy and never heard of her. it appears she is a dilettante looking for a government sinecure. Yet these people are put in charge of education 180,000 failing students in a broke district. Who in their right mind thinks they are the most qualified people in Philadelphia for this job?
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on January 17, 2014 4:26 pm
So who is the most qualified? Give us some names. I am curious. I know the PEC from West Philly and it has a great reputation for helping a lot of people with limited resources. But I guess being a good steward of funding is not a "qualification" in the alternate reality of the SDP.

She is not an educator. She supports herself running a "non-profit" which has little to do with education. She profits from the "non-profit" so she has some skills. Do said skills have anything to do with running a large Urban School District? Corbett likes her. Doses anyone thing Corbett is good for Urban education ? Running a "non-profit" in Philly teaches you a lot about which politician's back needs to be scratched. But what does it have to do with education?
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on January 20, 2014 1:48 am
Got it. The only people qualified for an oversight board of a system have to come from the system itself. That's a Great design for zero accountability and failure.
Submitted by Annonymous (not verified) on January 20, 2014 7:02 am
My concern is she sees the private sector as a solution. Yes, she runs a very large non-profit (80 plus employees) that gets most of its funding from the federal and state government. (They charge residents for housing but that is about 10% of its budget.) She is not running an "advocacy" group - they tend to see a role for emphasizing the public good versus private profit. She is quoted stating she is "not pro public schools" and "not pro voucher" which means she will follow the Corbett agenda - privatize as much as possible, prop up parochial schools at the expense of public schools and expand charter managers (e.g. KIPP, Mastery, Universal, etc.) They will do the bidding of the Phila. School Dictatorship and its $230,000+/year head Gleason.
